Download free version of Happy Hands

(Updated November 30 2004.)

The free Microsoft recognizer engine

You will need:

You will need - Happy Hands

Happy Hands is distributed as a JAR file that is a self extracting install program. It uncompresses itself and installs the Happy Hands binaries. The JAR file has everything your computer needs to run Happy Hands except the recognizer engine.

And - The Speech Recognizer

The best recognizer out there is IBM Via Voice. I have the 200 dollar version they make you buy for Windows XP/2000. There is a 25 dollar version that works on Windows 98. The Microsoft recognizer is free and it works okay, but not as well as Via Voice. We have provided a link to it here. Via Voice understands the Happy Hands grammars most of the time. If you don't have a speech recognizer installed on your computer, it is really worth 0 to save you hands from the archaic keyboard. If you already have another recognizer installed, such as the Naturally Speaking recognizer, this might work too.

The Platform

Happy Hands currently works only on Windows 98, 2000, and XP systems. We may add Linux, UNIX and Mac support as well.

The Price

The intended price is 0 dollars. At this time we are just going to let you have the program for free, BUT - it will stop working after only a few weeks. There is not paid version at this time.

The Installation Proceedure

Run the file install_happyHandsJava.jar from a file manager or a command line using java -jar install_happyHandsJava.jar. This starts the install program, which will ask you for two pieces of information:
  1. The directory to put Happy Hands
  2. The JDK directory, which should be something like C:/devel/j2sdk1.4.1. If you enter the JDK directory wrong you may need to change settings/workspace.xml so the compiler and java libraries can be found.

The install program then:

  1. copies files and localizes some settings
  2. runs redistrib/spchapi.exe which installs some code, enabling the connection to the recognizer
  3. copies MFC Version 7 DLL's to Windows/System32 or WINNT/System32.

Happy Hands is started with the Windows executable launcher HappyHands_Java.exe. Thats all there is to it. Don't forget to read the manual. (RTFM!).
